ASA  101 Basic Keelboat
Become a Sailor in One Weekend

Prerequisite: None      Boat: Hunter

Days: Sat. - Sun.

Cost: $395

Our ASA Basic Keelboat Course 101 is by far our most popular course.Conveniently scheduled over a weekend in Kemah, this introductory course strikes the perfect balance between intensive instruction and relaxed fun on the water. Taught on our Hunter sailboats, ASA 101 is the perfect way to start sailing.

Students often wonder if you really can learn to sail in a weekend. The answer to that question is absolutely, “yes”! The basics of sailing are really quite simple and can be mastered by nearly everyone in two days.

Once the basics are mastered, you can practice your new skills by becoming a member in our fractional sailing program SailTime

ASA 101 presents the bare minimum of theory to help you understand what is going on in the boat. You will be sailing during that first session.

Building on the introduction, ASA 101 Basic Keelboat provides the basics of sailing vocabulary, principles of sailing, sail trim, steering with a tiller and rules of the road. All of this information is presented in a safe, non-threatening way as you sail on one of our Hunter sailboats under the watchful eye of your on-board certified instructor.

At the end of the weekend you will be ready to begin sailing on your own. The best follow-up to our course is to sail. Sail with friends, crew on a racing boat, become a member in SailTime or NauticShare, charter or buy a boat, but the more you sail, the more you will be amazed at how much you learned in your weekend course.

Boat: Hunter 36 or larger

Days: Mon. - Wed.

For many recreational sailors the ultimate sailing vacation is a family yacht charter in the British Virgin Islands or some other exotic location. Our ASA 103 Coastal Cruising and ASA 104 Bareboat Charter Combination Course is the ultimate sailing education experience.  We offer the best introduction to cruising and bareboat charter available on the Texas Gulf Coast.
Designed for sailors with some experience,
our Combo Course offers a three day tour of some of the best cruising areas on Galveston Bay and Gulf of Mexico. We teach this course on a sailing yacht with a generator.  Our instructors are the most experienced in the area and will teach all the local knowledge of our cruising area. Students provide their own bedding and provisioning.

The usual cruise plan affords the experience of anchoring out one night and spending the other night at the Harbor House Marina in Galveston. Many couples find this experience so rewarding they immediately book a Sunsail Yacht Charter right in our Kemah office once back at the dock.

Our ASA 103/104 Course is a mix of theory and practice concentrating on docking under power, basic navigation, engine checks and basic troubleshooting and much more. We also teach what to look for on taking command of a chartered boat, how to organize a crew, and some basic emergency steps to take when things don’t work out quite as planned are also touched upon.  Chartering a boat is always challenging, you must be prepared for the unexpected- always.  More details can be found at www.asa.com
